Come and join us at the Doncaster Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival
The Rotary club of Doncaster St. George's, in partnership with Doncaster Tourism are organising a spectacular Dragon Boat Festival at Lakeside, Doncaster on Saturday 24th July 2010. Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today - as well as the most fun! Up to 10 people paddle each 30' boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit!
We are looking for a number of crews, companies and organisations who would like to battle it out in 30ft brightly painted dragon boats over the 200m course. This event is an excellent opportunity for companies, clubs and organisations to take part in a professionally managed, fun packed and action filled day with the potential to raise £1,000’s for for Macmillan Cancer Support and other Rotary Charities and worthy causes. Macmillan improves the lives of people affected by cancer and provides practical, medical & financial support in pushing for better cancer care. The crewEach crew is made up of 10 paddlers, a beating drummer at the front of the boat, and a steering helm at the tail end (the steering helm is provided by the event organiser). The event company who will run this event have over 15 years experience in staging this type of event and is the only commercial dragon boat event operator recognised and approved by the British Dragon Boat Racing Association. Crew members do not need any previous experience as training is provided on the day. Organisations can enter as many crews as they wish in what is a great team building event, and a great way to promote your company or organisation. Each crew have a minimum of three races with the top three teams receiving a set of engraved medals on colour ribbons and a unique Perspex model dragon boat or mounted ceramic dragon for the overall winners. As well as the Dragon Boat Racing there will be other activities at Lakeside as part of a fun-filled family day. Taking partIf you would like to take part the entry fee is £350 per crew (hopefully paid for by the organisation) and each crew member is expected to raise a minimum of £30 in sponsorship for the charities.
